Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a thermoplastic polymer compsn. having improved adhesiveness, by melt-mixing a mixture consisting of an ethylene polymer, a butyl rubber and an unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of an org. peroxide.
CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated carboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof is added to a mixture of an ethylene polymer and a butyl rubber. The resulting mixture is melt-mixed in the presence of an org. peroxide at a temp. at which the org. peroxide is decomposed, whereby the desired polymer compsn. can be obtd. This compsn. has good compatibility with many thermoplastic polymers, and can intimately be dispersed in PVC, polyester, nylon and olefin polymers to improve their physical properties such as resistance to impact and cold. Particularly, this compsn. exhibits a remarkable effect as a modifier for olefin polymers an nylons and is also effective as a base polymer for a hot melt adhesive. When the compsn. is used for the hot melt adhesive, a tackifying resin such as a rosin resin or a phenolic resin and, if necessary, a wax, a plasticizer, etc. are blended.
