PURPOSE:To achieve continuous voltage regulation by providing a couple of tapped transformers and a couple of AC SWs including semiconductor switches SWs having the capability of self-extinction of arc, and by exercising pulse-width modulation control over the SWs. CONSTITUTION:A voltage V1 is applied across the primary winding of a transformer T, and the secondry winding has taps T1 and T2 for voltages V21 and V22. The voltages V21 and V22 determine a maximum and a minimum voltage applied to a load L. Between the taps T1 and T2, and load L, AC switches S1 and S2 of diode bridge constitution with bridge SCRs are connected. Then, SCRs TH1 and TH2 are semiconductor SWs having the capability of self-extinction of arc, the TH1 and TH2 are turned on and off by turned through a pulse-width modulation controlling circuit and the on-off ratio is controlled according to an AC voltage command supplied to the load. Thus, adjusting the on-off ratios of the AC SWsS1 and S2 varies the AC voltage supplied to the load continuously.
