Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst capable of simultaneously removing CO, HC, NOx in a waste gas in high capacity by a method wherein a carrier is coated with a composite oxide comprising activated alumina and a rare earth element and, thereafter a noble metal is supported on the obtained coated carrier. CONSTITUTION:An activated alumina powder and a rare earth element or a compound thereof are mixed and baked to synthesize a composite oxide such as serium aluminate or the like. The obtained composite oxide is coated on a predertermined carrier and, subsequently, on a surface of the obtained coated carrier, a catalyst of a noble metal such as palladium, platinum-rhodium or the like is supported. The resultant waste gas removing catalyst obtained by this method has characteristics with a wide window width because, in a side of a low redox index (an L value), if much oxygen is released from the composite oxide of the carrier, a conveesion ratio of CO, HC is increased and, conversely, in a side of a high L value, a condition wherein the composite oxide takes in excessive oxygen and the L value is approached to 1 is formed and a conversion ratio of NOx is increased.
