Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce evaporating energy and the use amount of fresh water by a method wherein a dilute black liquor is concentrated by a membrane separator, the resultant concentrated liquid is further concentrated and is burned, while a permeated liquid derived from the separator is used as washing water for a lime mud in a causticizing step.
CONSTITUTION: The dilute black liquor 14 generated in a digesting step 1 for wood chips 7 and a washing step 2 for a non-washed pulp 8 is concentrated by a membrane separating step 6 in which an ultrafilter or a reverse osmosis device is used. Upon the separating step 6, high polymeric lignin in the liquor 14 substantially remains in the concentrated liquid 14'. This liquid 14' is fed to a conventional concentrating step 3 and a burning step 4 to recover organic materials as thermal energy. On the other hand, Na salts are recovered in the form of a melt 18 consisting of Na2CO3 and Na2S, then they are dissolved in water 21 or lime mud washing water 20 to form a green liquor, and the salts are regenerated in the form of a white liquor 10 containing NaOH and Na2S by treating the green liquor in the causticizing step 5. In this case, the permeated liquid 22 derived from the membrane treatment is used as part or the whole of the fresh water 21.
