Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce trimming allowances, to prevent cutter edges in motion from heating extremely and to improve the cutter life remarkably by using a cutter having a spiral cutting edge on the outer peripheral surface when a steel band is trimmed.
CONSTITUTION: The cutter 1 is provided with a spiral cutting edge 11 suitable for cutting in the downward or vertical direction over the whole outer peripheral surface of a cylindrical body, which has a diameter exceeding about 30mm, and with a fitting hole 12 in the center part of an arbor. The cutters 1 are held vertically, at right angles to the edges of a running steel band a and for example, so that they can move vertically within a desired range about 300mm. The steel band a running in contact with both cutters 1 is sandwiched by pairs of upper and lower pinch rollers 8 and guided so that cutting resistance does not cause running troubles.
