Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a propyl group-containing quaternary ammonium salt easily, by isomerizing an allyl group of an allyl (cyclo)aclkylammonium hydroxide to give a novel propenyl compound, followed by subjecting this compound to catalytic reduction.
CONSTITUTION: A quaternary ammonium salt shown by the formulaI(R is 1W12C alkyl, or cycloalkyl; n is 1, 2, or 3), for example, is isomerized in a solvent of a lower aliphatic alcohol/nonproton solvent, to give a novel quaternary ammonium salt shown by the formula II. If necessary, this salt is neutraized with a compound shown by the formula HX (X- is OH-, Cl-, or Br-), and is reduced with molecular hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst supported by a carrier, e.g., sulfate, carbonate, to give a quaternary ammonium salt shown by the formula III. This compound is useful as an additive for plastic products, surface active agent, raw material for organic synthesis, etc.
