Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent sticking of molten steel owing to splashes at the leading end of a lance by setting the height of the top blowing lance at a specific value in association with the depth of a steel bath and the amt. of a bottom blowing gas in a desiliconization period in performing blowing work in a top and bottom blown converter. CONSTITUTION:In refining molten iron to steel by oxygen blowing in a top and bottom blown converter provided with a top blowing lance and a bottom blowing device, the intersurface space LH (m) between the leading end of the top blowing oxygen lance and the surface of the static bath of the molten metal in the converter is adjusted at the value shown by the equation [I]. In the equation, qoB is the amt. of a bottom blowing gas per unit weight of the molten steel (Nm<3>/min/ton) and HM is the depth (m) of the molten metal. This prevents the occurrence of operation failure by closing of the lance or difficulty in the removal of stuck steel pieces on account of sticking of the steel bath at the leading end of the top blowing lance by the spashes of the molten metal with the bottom blowing oxygen at the point of the time when the slag formation prior to ending of the desiliconization period is not completed.
