Abstract
PURPOSE:To constitute a tester which has superior sensitivity and position resolution, by detecting the state of a reflected wave by using pulse which have longer width and intervals that the time when light goes and returns through an optical fiber to be measured. CONSTITUTION:A reference pulse generator 1 generates a test waveform A so that the output width tW and interval tC-tW of a light source 2 are greater than the going and returning propagation time tR of a fiber 4 to be tested. The output of the light source 2 is inputted to the fiber 4 through an optical directional coupler 3, which separates and extracts the reflected output light of the fiber to obtain a signal having a waveform C; and the signal is passed through a photodetector 5, an amplifier 6, and a waveform average arithmetic processor 7 to obtain a waveform D from a differentiator D, and the waveform is displayed on a display device 8. Although the waveform D in the figure shows a normal state, the time and size when the waveform changes suddenly are detected to find a fault point and its condition. Consequently, a peak value is still low and average transmitted light power is increased, so that a tester has an improved S/N ration and superior sensitivity and position resolution.
