Abstract
PURPOSE: When the titled compound is produced by oxidizing an aromatic compound such as toluene in liquid phase, the residue of the heavy metal catalyst or the aqueous solution containing heavy metals is brought into contact with an absorvent to remove the reaction inhibitors, thus increasing the yield and simplifying the purification as well as other processes.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic compound bearing methyl or formyl groups which directly link with benzene ring carbons is oxidized in liquid phase with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst to produce an aromatic carboxylic acid and the reaction mixture is esterified with methanol to give its methyl ester. At this time, the objective compound is separated from the oxidation or esterification reaction mixture and the resultant residue containing heavy metals or the aqueous solution which is obtained by bringing the heavy metal residue into contact with water, is brought into contact with an adsorbent such as activated alumina, then the product is recycled to the reaction as a heavy metal catalyst for oxidation. The reaction inhibitors are selectively removed with no adverse effect on the catalyst.
