Abstract
PURPOSE: Acrylonitrile is catalytically hydrated in the presence of a copper catalyst to produce the titled compound of high quality that can make a stable aqueous solution and is used for high-molecular acrylamide polymers.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of a copper catalyst such as metallic copper in the form of a powder of wire, acrylonitrile, which is previously extracted with water or subjected to extractive distillation with water to reduce acetonitrile content to less than 20ppm, is catalytically hydrated in a temperature range 100W140°C. Then, the product is purified by treating with a cation exchange resin to give the titled compound. The preferably weight ratio of acrylonitrile to water is 60:40W5:95.
EFFECT: The content of the unreacted acrylamide monomer, which is toxic, is reduced to less than 0.2wt% in the polymer.
