Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve a stable and highly accurate detection of a road surface by detecting the brightness of a target made up of bright and dark parts with two cameras different in the optical axis paternized after it provided on the road surfaces is lighted. CONSTITUTION:A target provided on a road surface 11 is made up of a bright region 11a and a dark region 11b and the relative brightness of the region 11a and the region 11b vary with the conditions of the road surface in fine and rainy weathers or the like when lighted with a lighting device 12. The images of the brightness are separately taken with two cameras different in the optical axis having EE lenses 13a and 13b. They are applied to a discriminator 17 as a bit signal corresponding to a video signal and a code signal corresponding to high frequency components thereof through quantizing device 15 and a frequency discriminator 16. This enables stable and highly accurate detection of road surface conditions unaffected by disturbance such as mist in the air and dust.
