Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the panel contrast to the change of luminous intensity of atmosphere for a liquid crystal display device which makes use of a polarizing effect, by using both a fixed polarizing plate and a detachable polarizing plate. CONSTITUTION:Front and rear glass substrate 33 and 35 hold a liquid crystal layer 34 in-between. A rear polarizing plate 36 (about 43% single unit transmittance and about 95% of polarization) is stuck to the substrate 35; while a front polarizing plate 32 (about 49% single unit transmittance and about 80% of polarization) is stuck to the substrate 33 respectively. In addition, a front polarizing plate 31 (equal single unit transmittance, degree of polarization and direction of polarizing axis to the plate 32) is provided in a detachable way. Such display device is used with detachment of the plate 31 in a room of the ordinary illumination and with attachment of the plate 31 in a place of high luminous intensity such as the inside of a room of the bright illumination (or the outdoors) respectively. In such way, a high- contrast display is always ensured.
