PURPOSE:To improve operability through separation of inputting operation for retrieval codes from retrieval processing by reading retrieval codes stored previously in a storage device successively and by retrieving and outputting corresponding pieces of picture information successively. CONSTITUTION:When the retrieval code of picture information to be registered is inputted on a keyboard 2 in registration mode, a CPU15 checks the code and, when it is normal, stores it in an RAM16. When an original is set on a two-dimensional scanner 6, line information obtained by scanning picture information on a document, etc., under the control of the CPU15 is stored successively in a page buffer 11 for share of one page, and then the information is transferred to a refresh memory 14 and displayed on a display device 7. After an operator checking the information by looking at the display, the line information is recorded by a magnetic tape device 9 and at the same time, position information recorded corresponding to the retrieval code is stored in an RAM16. In retrieval mode, the retrieval code is recorded by a floppy-disk device 4 and its code and a code in the RAM16 are collated.
