Abstract

PURPOSE: To stably form a uniform thin glass film by hydrolyzing metallic alcoholate contg. silicon alkoxide as a principal component in the presence water or an org. solvent and forming a film in a free space by using the resulting viscous soln.
CONSTITUTION: To silicon alkoxide is added alcoholate of other metal such as Zr. This added alcoholate is hydrolyzed in the presence of water or an org. solvent such as methanol to increase the viscosity to about 10W100. A film is formed in a free space by drawing, extrusion or other means using the prepared soln., and it is dried by heating to facilitate the hydrolysis and the stabilization of the shape as well as to remove the contained volatile component. By this method a uniform thin glass film having about 1W100μm thickness is obtd.
