Abstract

PURPOSE: Chitin dope is subjected to wet spinning and the fiber formed is treated with a coagulation solution under relax to produce chitin fiber suitably used to make absorbable surgical suture, because of its high strength and flexibility.
CONSTITUTION: Chitin, so-called polysaccharide composed of poly (n-acetyl-D- glcosamin), is dissolved in a solvent such as trichloroacetice acid into a chintin dope, which is extruded through nozzles into a coagulation bath, preferably anhydrous acetone or anhydrous methanol at 10W25°C and taken up to form fiber containing the solvent. Then, the fiber is treated under relax, e.g., it is introduced into the second coagulation bath by means of a belt conveyor and treated for more than 1 minute to give the objective fiber.
