Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound selectively according to the kind of the catalyst carrier, by the catalytic hydrogenation of CO in the presence of a catalyst obtained by supporting Pd as the main catalyst and a metal element selected from Ia group metals, IIa group metals and Tl as a cocatalyst on a carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Pd and one or more metal elements selected from the Ia group metals, IIa group metals and Tl, are supported on a carrier (an oxide having hydroxyl groups on the surface, e.g. zeolite, silica, alumina, etc., is especially effective) to obtain the catalyst. CO is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of the catalyst at a CO/H2molar reaction of temperature of 50W400°C. When the carrier is alumina, silica, etc. which does not exhibit the characteristics as a solid acid, methanol is produced in high selectivity, and when the carrier is zeolite or an amorphous silica.alumina having the characteristics of a solid acid, dimethyl ether is produced in high selectivity.
