Abstract

PURPOSE:To make efficient the coding, by coding two coordinates of intermediate tone region in advance, in a method coding video data of multi-value obtained through sampling. CONSTITUTION:The entire area of picture is divided into an intermediate tone region A and a non-intermediate tone region B by calculating the statistical amount of density information of video data. As to the intermediate tone region A, two coordinates G(I1J1),G(I2J2) designating a rectangular region of this intermediate tone are coded and transmitted ahead the coding of picture. As to this region, the video data is coded by using the primary dimension level plane coding method as a multi- value data. On the other hand, as to the non-intermediate tone region B, the video data is coded by using the modified read coding method as the binary data. Thus, as a whole the transmission efficiency can be increased.
