Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent the chipping or the like of both the edges around the wrist pin hole of a connecting rod which has a bundle of fibers around the wrist pin hole and is provided with light alloy as a matrix on the fibers, by prescribing the depth of chamfering of both the edges around the wrist pin hole.
CONSTITUTION: A bundle of unidirectionally extending fibers F is provided in the body 1 of a connecting rod between its large end 2 and small end 3 so that the bundle is located almost in the middle of the thickness L of the rod along the length of a wrist pin. The end Fa of the bundle of fibers at the small end 3 is divided into two around a wrist pin hole 4 so that the rod part around the hole is reinforced with the fibers. Light alloy is filled as a matrix M on the fibers F. When the thickness L along the length of the wrist pin and the diameter D of the wrist pin hole 4 are related to each other as L/D=1.0W35, the sum of the depths of the chamfered sections 5 on both the edges around the hole 4 or the sum of the radii of curvature of the chamfered sections is set equal to 10W25% of the thickness L. This results in preventing the chipping, cracking or the like at both the edges around the wrist pin hole 4 and the fatigue damage of the small end 3.
