Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase lubricating quality of a slide contact surface, by providing required fine grooves on the slide contact surface of a seat ring or driven ring in a mechanical seal, once sucking a fluid into the slide contact surface and performing lubricating action.
CONSTITUTION: An external pressure type mechanical seal 1 prevents a leak of fluid A sealed to its periphery by the sliding contact between a seat ring 3, fixed to a housing 2, and a driven ring 5 fixed to a rotary shaft 4 inserting through the seat ring 3. Here on a slide contact surface 6 of the driven ring 5, fine grooves 7..., diagonally located rearward of its diameter with respect to the direction B of rotation of the driven ring 5, similarly fine grooves 7'..., diagonally located forward, are provided in such a manner that their both ends reach a peripheral end 6' and internal peripheral end 6" of the slide contact surface 6 simultaneously the grooves are intersected each other.
