Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the light resistance of a liq. crystal to ultraviolet rays and to elongate the life by adding an ultraviolet absorber to orienting films. CONSTITUTION:A benzotriazole or benzophenone ultraviolet absorber is dissolved in a vertically orienting material such as hexamethyldisiloxane resin by 0.05- 10wt% and mixed. Surfaces of electrode substrates are coated with the mixture to form orienting films. Since the films contain the ultraviolet absorber, ultraviolet rays in incident light are absorbed when the light passes through one of the films, so the transmitted light passing through a liq. crystal is made almost free from ultraviolet rays. The ultraviolet absorber may be added to only one orienting film on a substrate surface at the incident light side. Thus, a dichromatic azo dye having very low resistance to ultraviolet rays while giving a clear contrast with a high order parameter can be used.
