PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for stopping a printing head each time a character is printed and enhance the printing speed by a method wherein two character generators are mounted for one printing head, and two adjacent characters are printed at timings which are partly overlapped. CONSTITUTION:When DATA(i) are inputted, strobes STB1(g), STB2(h) are alternately generated each time at which one of different pieces of data A, B, C, D (character codes) is inputted. The data DATA are latched alternately into latch circuits 24, 25 by the strobes STB1, STB2. The latched character codes corresponding to two adjacent characters are inputted to character generators 26, 27 together with row addresses ROW A1, ROW A2, respectively. In this method, since a column scanning system is used, row drive signals of R1-R5 (a-e) for each character are formed in a multiplexor driver 30 in accordance with the row addresses ROW A1, ROW A2.
