PURPOSE:To make changeover switches automatically changed over by detecting the starting terminal of a magnetic tape during recording, by recording a discrimination signal at the beginning of the magnetic tape corresponding to the selected positions of the changeover switches for recording and reproducing characteristics, and by detecting the discrimination signal in a reproduced signal during reproduction. CONSTITUTION:When an audio signal is recorded after subjected to noise reduction processing, mode selection switches SW2a and SW2b are placed at sides R, and noise reduction changeover switches SW1a, SW1b, and SW1c are changed over to sides NR. Then, a control signal is inputted to a control circuit 27 to drive a magnetic tape 8, and when a magnetic tape part comes after a leader tape part, a detector 17 generates a detection signal, so that time pulses generated by a monostable multivibrator transmitter 18 are applied to an AND circuit 19, a switch switching control circuit 22 and a muting circuit 6. The circuit 19, once a voltage VB is applied, is placed in gating operation and a discrimination signal generated by a discrimination-signal generator 20 is recorded on a magnetic tape 8 by a recording and reproducing head 9.
