Abstract
PURPOSE: A water-soluble basic substance is contained in a chewing gum in an amount enough to neutralize the acid formed by acid fermentation of saccharides in the mouth to produce high-quality prophylactic gum against tooth decay.
CONSTITUTION: A water-soluble basic substance such as sodium carbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate is contained in a chewing gum in such an amount as the mouth is kept at about 8pH by neutralizing the acid formed by acid fermentation of saccharides. The actuatl amount of the water-soluble basic substance is, when the gum includes no organic acids, about 0.002W4wt% in case of sodium carbonate and about 0.08W30wt% in case of sodium bicarbonate, based on the total amount of the chewing gum.
