Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having concentrical core-clad, by heating thermoplastic resin, spinning it to a fiber having a prescribed outside diameter, making it pass through in a pipe made of thermoplastic resin having a lower refractive index than that of said resin, heating the pipe, and spinning said fiber. CONSTITUTION:Thermoplastic resin[for instance: polystylene (1.59 refractive index), polycarbonate (1.59 refractive index), etc.]is heated, is spinned to a fiber having a prescribed outside diameter, and after that, it is made to pass through a plastic pipe consisting of thermoplastic resin having a lower refractive index than that of said resin[for instance: polymethyl methacrylate (1.49 refractive index), tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (1.338 refractive index), etc.], this pipe is heated, and is spinned to a fiber having a prescribed outside diameter, by which an optical fiber is manufactured. Since a clad component is formed by heating and softening a thermoplastic resin pipe, an extremely uniform clad layer is formed, and an optical fiber having concentric core and clad is obtained.
