Abstract

PURPOSE: To roll a hard to roll alloy without formation of flaws and to improve yield by cutting an ingot or billet to a circular cylindrical shape, shrinkage-fitting a malleable pipe thereto, welding both ends, and hot rolling the same then removing the pipe.
CONSTITUTION: An ingot or billet of an alloy is cut to a circular cylindrical shape in order to improve the tight adhesion of a metallic pipe to be clad on a hard to roll alloy. In order to prevent the temp. drop of the alloy surface, a pipe of good malleability having sufficient wall thickness, an inside diameter equal to or slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the alloy and length equal to or slightly shorter than the length of the alloy is used for the metallic pipe. The pipe is then heated in a way to avoid formation of too much scale and is shrinkage-fitted to the alloy, thence both ends of the pipe and the alloy are welded over the entire circumference to seal the pipe and the alloy in a tight adhesion state, after which these are hot rolled to a prescribed size and the clad pipe is removed by a chemical method or cutting.
