Abstract
PURPOSE:To simplify the process of charging a sealed alkaline storage battery by using an alkaline electrolyte containing a reducing phosphate which doesn't give any negative effect to battery performance, and making the charge capacity of the negative electrode sufficiently larger than that of the positive electrode. CONSTITUTION:A sealed alkaline storage battery is constituted by using an alkaline electrolyte containing a reducing phosphate such as sodium hypophosphite or potassium hypophosphite. As a result, only the negative electrode is charged during the initial charging since the reducing phosphate contained in the electrolyte is oxidized in preference to the positive electrode, and the charge capacity of the negative electrode can be made adequately larger than that of the positive electrode. Consequently, the battery can be manufactured by simple process without carrying out any partial charging of the negative electrode before the assembly of the battery, and the cycle characteristic of the battery can be enhanced.
