Abstract
PURPOSE: To restrain the formation of scale and coagulum in the production of polyvinyl chloride by an emulsion polymerization for the paste, by adding tar and/or pitch in the polymerization mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Approximately 0.00002W0.005pts.wt. tar and/or pitch (e.g. coal tar) is added to a polymerization mixture (the addition is preferably conducted prior to feeding of all of the materials for polymerization) per 100pts.wt. vinyl chloride monomer when manufacturing a polyvinyl chloride resin for the paste by polymerizing vinyl chloride monomer (approximately 50% or less vinyl acetate or other monomer may be contained) by means of emulsion polymerization, seeding emulsion polymerization or emulsion suspension polymerization. The addition of approximately 0.002W0.5pt.wt. alkaline inorganic compound (e.g. NH3, NaOH) per 100pts.wt. vinyl chloride serves to reduce further a scale and coagulum.
