Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a free cutting steel suitable for use as a material for high performance gear by adding Al and Ca-Si as a deoxidizer to molten steel during vacuum degassing and refining to convert nonmetallic inclusions into composite ones consisting of oxide and sulfide as well as to float and separate large-sized nonmetallic inclusions.
CONSTITUTION: When steel for gear us refined, Al and Ca-Si are used as a deoxidizer during vacuum degassing, and by carrying out forced agitation with a nonoxidizing gas, large-sized nonmetallic inclusions are floated, shifted into molten slag and removed. An adequate amount of Pb is then added to the molten steel and uniformly dispersed to refine the steel. The refined steel contains 0.10W0.55% C, <0.35% Si, <1.70% Mn, 0.20W0.15% Pb, 0.01W0.04% Al, 0.0002W0.0005% Ca, <0.06% S, <0.0030% O and <0.020% N. The residual nonmetallic inclusions are composite inclusions consisting of Al2O3-SiO2-CaO and (Mn, Ca)S, and ≥80% of the inclusions have ≤2.0 ratio of major axis/minor axis and ≤10μm major axis. Thus, the resulting steel has superior characteristics as gear steel.
