In a serial printer, printing is performed sequentially on printing paper via a printing ribbon during the forward and backward movements of a print head supported by a print head support that is guided by a guide rod and driven back and forth. A cassette containing a pair of printing ribbons stacked on top of each other in stages and each having both ends wound around a pair of reels, and a cassette support base that is guided and supported by a print head support base so as to be movable up and down to form a rack device. a pinion device rotatably held within the cassette support and engaged with the rack device which is fitted for rotation with the guide rod and is slidable along the guide rod; and a pinion device fixed to one end of the guide rod. a gear device which is pivotally supported on the machine frame, is connected to a solenoid, can be pivoted to and held in a first pivot position or a second pivot position by actuation of a thread maid, and is engaged with the gear device; and a sector gear for driving the sector gear, and the solenoid holds the sector gear in the first pivot position during forward movement of the print head and moves the sector gear to the cassette via a gear system, a pinion system, and a rack system. The support is moved up and down to hold one print ribbon of the cassette on the cassette support in a position where it cooperates with the print head, and upon return movement of the print head, the sector gear is pivoted in the second pivot direction. The cassette support is pivoted and held in position, and the cassette support is actuated in a vertical direction via a gearing and pinion arrangement to hold the other print ribbon of the cassette on the cassette support in a position for cooperating with the printhead. A printing ribbon switching device for a serial printer, characterized in that the printing ribbon switching device is operable in a serial printer.
