BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Cyclones are commonly used to separate contaminants from liquids. In the manufacture of paper, if the separation is carried out to remove contaminants that are denser than the liquid, approximately 0
.. A slurry of paper fibers and water consisting of 7% by weight fibers is
It is introduced into a conical separator, usually with a lowermost apex, via an inlet recessed from said apex. As a vortex is formed in the conical chamber of the separator, the heavy contaminant particles move to the walls of the cone and then downward to the apex where they are discharged and proceed to the outlet with a good ratio of paper fibers. Most of the fibers and water substantially liberated from the heavy contaminants are discharged through an axial outlet passage located at the inlet end of the cone opposite the apex.

The light fraction of contaminants can also be removed by using an axial outlet tube located coaxially within the water and fiber outlet or at the apex coaxially with the apex orifice.

This means that it is necessary to establish a group. The above facts result in undesirable additional pump suction and invested capital.

This is achieved by passing the liquid into the waste chamber in such a controlled manner that any tendency of the liquid in the separator to flow out of the opening is counteracted by the pressure exerted by the liquid flowing through the circuit. In practice, the above is achieved by regulating the flow rate and hydraulic pressure of the waste circuit. For the above purpose, valves 11.12.

This can be done in a variety of ways, but reference is made below to Figures 4, 5 or 6 showing various other arrangements.

The liquid level remains unchanged and valve 22 remains closed. The rise and fall of the liquid level in the tank is therefore due to the flow from the separator through the orifice 8.

During the installation experiment, bypass valve 3
1 was found to be useful. In a test for automatic liquid level control using the valve 20, the valve is always vibrated near its intermediate position under normal operating conditions. It also ensures that the waste circuit never closes.

The lightweight contaminants may be plastic materials or oil particles. The device of Figure 7a has an inlet 2' for the liquid to be purified and an outlet 3 for the light waste.
7 and an outlet 39 for the purified liquid. The light waste outlet 37 leads to a dumping chamber 41, which may be provided with a structure corresponding to the device described in FIGS. 2, 2b or 2c. The separator is of the unidirectional flow type. Substantially, the light object removal device is a reversal of the device in section 1, the entire waste circulation path corresponding to that described with respect to FIG.
a corresponding valve 11' for controlling the pressure and flow of 1;
12' and 20'. A sifter 16' is also provided to purify the liquid in the waste circuit. This constitutes a lightweight waste removal device. All other equipment includes:
The same reference numerals as those used in FIGS. 2 and 3 are used.
