Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 産業上の利用分野 本発明は共溶融アルミナジルコニア研磨材に係る。
従来の技術 米国特許第3,891,408号は既知のアルミナ/ジ
ルコニア研磨材が殆んど有用ではなかった低圧および中
圧研磨に特に適当である共晶組成及び近共晶組成(35
〜50%ジルコニア)を有する共溶融アルミナジルコニ
ア研磨材を開示する。
本発明は米国特許第3,891,408号に開示された
研磨材の改良でアシ、この改良は研磨布紙製品の性能を
改良するのに特に有用であることが見い出された。
発明の概要 本発明は米国特許m3,891,408号に開示された
共晶組成または近共晶組成のアルミナ/−)ルコニア研
磨材製品に係るが、Y2O3として計算して酸化イツト
リウムを0.1〜2.0重量%含む点においてそうした
研磨材と区別される。この研磨材はたとえば、米国特許
第3,891,408号に教示されているよりにアーク
炉でアルミナ、ジルコニア、およびY2O3またはそれ
らのブレカーサ−を溶融してつくる。
この溶融は、少なくとも溶融製品をモニルドに流しこん
で急速に冷却すべき場合には、僅かに還元条件下で行い
、よって亜酸化物、炭化物、窒化物、炭窒化物、オキシ
ニトリド、またはいくつかの元素状金属のような還元生
成物が少量であるが認めうる量で存在するようにすると
とが好ましい。
こうして、この製品は明るい色または白つほい外観を有
するというよシも、認めうる金色の金属領域を時々伴っ
て黒色の外観を有する。このような部分的に還元された
材料の存在は、10分の数置fi%の窒素および炭素の
存在、そして3%またはそれ以下の酸化による重量増加
によって示される。
この製品は溶融状態から急冷して、先行する特許第3,
891,408号に記載されているように微細な結晶構
造を作シだし、よって共晶コロニーの中心の平均−,ド
間隔が4,000オングストロームより小さくすること
が不可欠である。
還元条件を確実にするために、炭素またはアルミニウム
またはジルコニウム金属のような容易に酸化される物質
を、溶融物を急冷モールドに流しこむ直前に添加するこ
とができる。
冷却後、製品をたとえばロールクラッシャーで破砕し、
篩にかけ、砥粒の有用な寸法部分に分別する。それから
砥粒はこの業界で公知のすべての慣用の仕方で予め作成
された可撓性基材に適用して研磨布紙製品を製造するこ
とができる。
Y2O3の溶融物への添加の効果は単斜晶ジルコニアの
含有量を低減し、よって相変態(正方晶系から単斜晶系
へ)によるクラックを最小限化することにあると信じら
れる。その結果高い硬度が得られる。
例1 下記の材料を含む3,430ポンドのバッチを作成した

% 典型的なQ5A10ジルコニアの分析値は下記の通シで
ある。

合物の最初の供給が15分で完了したのち、溶融を20
分間続けて、そのときY2O3を5分間隔で添力oL、
最終製品中のY20!、の量を0.5%にした。次いで
、金属アルミニウム(混合物の4%)を添加し、その後
さらに15分間経過した(供給からタラfまでの合計時
間55分)。溶融した生成物を主インチ離間せる鋼製プ
レート間でキヤ6 スティングした(米国特許第3.993,119号に開
示されたようなモールドを用いた)。
溶融し固化した製品の(HPDlo 22 )の重量%
単位の化学分析値は下記の通シである。

アーク炉で実施した。混合物は下記のものからなってい
た。
Q5AIQ 9条 この操作では、スタートから25分で供給を完了した。
さらに5分間溶融した後、イツトリアを添加して製品中
に0.42%を与えた。添加は5分間で完了し、その時
金属アルミニウムを添加し、そしてアルミニウムの添加
をはじめてから15分で炉をタップした(例1と同じモ
ールドを用いた)。
例3 この例は例2と同一であるが、ただし高純度Y2O5の

この低コストY2O3ソースはY2O363%と残シ稀
土類酸化物とからなる。純粋の99.91 Y2O3か
ら作成した製品と比較して、その特性に著しい認めうる
相違は何ら見いだされなかった。
有用であることが見いだされた純粋でないY2O6ソー
スの二種類についての分析値は下記の通シであった。

Z r’o 2に低い溶解度を有するので望ましくない
と考えられる。酸化物Tb407−Lu203は(”

letyから刊行されている相状態図の観察から)Y2
O3の挙動に非常によく似ていると考えられるので良好
であると考えられる。
例1の研磨材を圧壊して長尺状の研磨材を作成し、イツ
トリアを含まないが概して同じ組成の研磨材を同様に圧
壊したものと比較した。36グリツトサイズの研磨材は
鋼を研磨するいろいろな穏類の研磨布紙ベルトによる研
磨試験において平均で約25俤の全体の品質の改良を示
した。50グリツドの製品は50グリツドサイズにおい
て僅かに5条強の平均的改良を示した。
銅切削用レノンプント切断砥石において、標準品に対し
て26%の改良があシ、レノンボンド円形砥石による鋼
研磨において23f)の改良であった。砥石試験の場合
、圧壊処理を変更して塊状の砥粒を作成した。
物理的硬度および破壊靭性試験では、Y2O30,5〜
15Jに最適値を有し、Y2O3を含まない点を除いて
、同じ研磨材よシ著しい特性の改良がY2O60,1〜
2%において示された。

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 1、Y2O3として計算して酸化イツトリウム0.1〜
    2.0重量%を含有しかつ共晶(eutectic)セ
    ル中心で測定してジルコニアのロッドの最大間隔400
    0オングストロームを有する溶融アルミナ/ジルコニア
    近共晶組成砥粒。 2o −前記酸化イツトリウムが0.4〜0.7%であ
    る特許請求の範囲第1項記載の砥粒。 3、Y20□として計算して酸化イトリウム0.1〜2
    .0重量係を含有しかつ共晶セル中心で測定してジルコ
    ニアロッドの最大間隔4000オングストロームを有す
    る溶融アルミナ/ジルコニア近共晶組成砥粒を少くとも
    その一面に結合して有する研磨布紙。 4、Y20□として計算して酸化イトリウム0.1〜2
    .0重量%を含有しかつ共晶セル中心で測定してゾコニ
    アロッドの最大間隔4000オングストロームを有する
    溶融アルミナ/ジルコニア近共晶組成砥粒を有機レジン
    マトリックスで結合した砥石。
