The present invention relates to a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water. Specifically, a method for producing alkylene glycol in which an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms is reacted with water in the presence of carbon dioxide using tungsten metal and/or a tungsten compound as a catalyst to increase the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol. Regarding. Alkylene glycols are used in a wide range of applications as raw materials for polyesters, urethanes, antifreezes, surfactants, cosmetics, etc. Conventionally, the method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting alkylene oxide with water is a method using a catalyst such as sulfuric acid (U.S. Pat. No. 2,255,411).
No. 1) and methods conducted under high temperature and high pressure without using catalysts have been adopted on an industrial scale. These methods have the disadvantage that in addition to monoalkylene glycol, large amounts of dialkylene glycol, trialkylene glycol, tetraalkylene glycol, and polyalkylene glycol are unavoidably produced as by-products. Furthermore, the production ratio of alkylene glycol obtained by the reaction between alkylene oxide and water is determined by the molar ratio of water to alkylene oxide. The molar ratio of water to oxide must be high. Generally, water is used in a large excess of 10 to 20 times the mole of alkylene oxide, in the presence or absence of a catalyst, at a pressure of 5 to 25 Kg/cm 2 G, and at a temperature of 100 to 200°C.
In this method, the raw material alkylene oxide is converted into alkylene glycol to complete the reaction. However, the product obtained by reacting water in large excess with respect to alkylene oxide is a dilute aqueous alkylene glycol solution of about 5 to 30% by weight. In order to separate and purify alkylene glycol from this dilute aqueous alkylene glycol solution, it is necessary to remove a large excess of water, which has the drawback of requiring complicated equipment such as an evaporator and a large amount of energy. Recently, in a method for producing alkylene glycol from alkylene oxide and water, the amount of water relative to the raw material alkylene oxide is reduced to 1 stoichiometric amount.
Several methods have been proposed in which the reaction is carried out by reducing the amount to about 2.5 times the molar amount and increasing the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol. For example, in Japanese Patent Publication No. 49-24448, alkylene oxide is converted into water using an alkali metal halide or quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst in the presence of carbon dioxide at a pressure of 10 to 80 atm and a temperature of 80 to 220°C. JP-A No. 51-127010 describes a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting the corresponding alkylene oxide with water and carbon dioxide in an organic base such as triethylamine-pyridine, and JP-A No. 54-127 No. 4 in the specification of No. 19905
A method has been disclosed in which alkylene oxide is hydrated in the presence of carbon dioxide using a phosphonium salt as a catalyst. However, these methods still have problems to be improved, such as insufficient effectiveness, corrosion of the equipment due to the catalyst used, and quality of the product alkylene glycol. The present inventors have overcome the drawbacks of conventional methods and have developed a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water. As a result of research on a manufacturing method for easily and economically obtaining monoalkylene glycol, especially with high selectivity, without producing By reacting three or more alkylene oxides with water, the alkylene oxide can be completely converted into alkylene glycol, and the proportion of monoalkylene glycol in the resulting alkylene glycol composition can be increased, and the carbon atoms of the raw material The present invention was completed by discovering that the amount of water can be reduced to a stoichiometric amount of about 1 to 5 times the mole of alkylene oxide of number 3 or more. One of the objects of the present invention is a method for producing alkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water,
In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing alkylene glycol in which the production ratio of monoalkylene glycol is increased. Another purpose is to adjust the amount of water to be reacted with an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms from 1 to
The purpose is to reduce the stoichiometric amount to about 5 times the mole, thereby reducing the utility cost in the separation and purification process of alkylene glycol after the completion of the reaction. The present invention is a method for producing alkylene glycol, which is characterized by reacting an alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms with water in the presence of carbon dioxide, using tungsten metal and/or a tungsten compound as a catalyst. In the present invention, carbon dioxide has 3 carbon atoms.
It is essential that alkylene oxide and water coexist in the reaction described above. In particular, the coexistence of carbon dioxide exhibits a remarkable effect when the amount of water relative to the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms is reduced to a stoichiometric amount of 1 or less or 1 to 5 times the mole. Carbon dioxide is used under the conditions of the present invention for alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms as a raw material.
It is used in a range of 0.00001 to 1 mol, preferably 0.0001 to 1 mol. Carbon dioxide is usually added in gaseous form, but it can also be a compound that releases carbon dioxide gas under the reaction conditions, such as alkali metal carbonates or bicarbonates, in particular sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, Even if it is added in the form of potassium carbonate, potassium hydrogen carbonate, etc., the purpose of the present invention will not be impaired in any way. The tungsten metal used as a catalyst in the present invention is preferably a tungsten metal with a high surface area, and can be used in the form of powder, sand, granules, wire mesh, honeycomb, or sponge in the liquid phase. The reactor may be used as a suspended or fixed bed, and the material of the reactor may contain tungsten metal. Among these, an appropriate one may be selected based on the strength of reaction activity, ease of handling, price, etc., and those that can be finely dispersed within the reaction system are particularly desirable. Tungsten compounds as catalysts include inorganic and organic compounds, such as oxides, acids, halogen compounds, phosphorus compounds, polyacids, alkali metal salts of acids or polyacids, alkaline earth metal salts of acids or polyacids, Ammonium salts of polyacids,
There are heavy metal salts of acids, etc. Specifically, tungsten dioxide, tungsten trioxide, tungstic acid,
Tungsten dichloride, tungsten pentachloride, tungsten dibromide, tungsten pentabromide, phosphotungstic acid, potassium tungstate, sodium tungstate, lithium tungstate, potassium paratungstate, sodium paratungstate, calcium tungstate, tungstic acid Barium, magnesium tungstate, ammonium tungstate, ammonium paratungstate, cadmium tungstate, cobalt tungstate, ferric tungstate, lead tungstate, cupric tungstate, bismuth tungstate, and the like are each effectively used. Also, tungsten metal and tungsten compounds can be used in combination. In the catalyst of the present invention, particularly preferred are alkali metal salts of tungstic acid such as sodium tungstate and potassium tungstate. These catalysts can be used as they are, in the form of shapes, or supported on silica, alumina, zeolite, etc. by known methods and dissolved in a liquid phase, mixed, suspended, or used as a fixed bed. The addition method is to mix it with water or to provide an independent addition port. In either case, there are two methods: adding the entire amount at the beginning, and adding a constant amount continuously or intermittently during the reaction. For practical purposes, it may be selected appropriately taking into consideration the reaction format, operating method, etc. The tungsten metal and/or tungsten compound in the present invention is used in an amount of 0.01% by weight or more, preferably 0.1 to 100% by weight, particularly 1 to 20% by weight, based on the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms. Examples of the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms as a reaction raw material used in the present invention include propylene oxide, butylene oxide, pentylene oxide, and styrene oxide. Further, any water can be used as the reaction raw material, and in particular, fresh water, ion-exchanged water, condensed water of steam, condensed water from a dehydration process in an alkylene oxide and alkylene glycol plant, etc. can be used. The amount of water relative to the raw material alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms can be used up to about 1 to 30 times the mole, but it can be particularly reduced to a stoichiometric amount of 1 to 5 times the mole, and depending on the reaction format. Although the amount may be less than that, it is generally preferable to use a slightly excess amount of 1.01 to 5 times the stoichiometric amount, preferably 1.01 to 2.5 times the stoichiometric amount. The reaction temperature varies depending on the type of catalyst, the composition of the reaction liquid at the beginning of the reaction, etc., but is generally carried out in the range of room temperature to 250°C, preferably 80 to 200°C. The pressure is preferably 0 to 30 kg/cm 2 G, preferably 2 to 25 kg/cm 2 G so that the alkylene oxide having 3 or more carbon atoms remains in a liquid phase. Of course, there is no particular problem in adjusting the pressure inside the reactor as necessary. The reaction format in the present invention may be a batch type, a semi-batch type or a continuous type. The method of the present invention will be specifically explained below with reference to examples, but these are merely illustrative examples, and it goes without saying that the present invention is not limited to these examples in any way. Of course, various implementations can be made within the scope. Here, the conversion rate of alkylene oxide, the selectivity of monoalkylene glycol, dialkylene glycol, trialkylene glycol, etc. are derived from the following formula. Conversion rate of alkylene oxide (%) = Number of moles of alkylene oxide before reaction - Number of moles of alkylene oxide after reaction / Number of moles of alkylene oxide before reaction × 100 Selectivity of monoalkylene glycol (%) = Number of moles of alkylene oxide produced Number of moles/Number of moles of reacted alkylene oxide x 100 Selectivity of dialkylene glycol (%) = Number of moles of dialkylene glycol produced x 2/Number of moles of reacted alkylene oxide x 100 Selectivity of trialkylene glycol and others ( %) = Number of moles of trialkylene glycol produced × 3 / Number of moles of reacted alkylene oxide × 100 Example 1 In a 200 ml stainless steel autoclave equipped with a stirrer, 2.0 g of sodium tungstate, 21.6 g of water,
34.8 g of propylene oxide was charged, and carbon dioxide gas was injected from a cylinder until the pressure reached 1.7 Kg/cm 2 G. Next, the total pressure was set to 6Kg/cm 2 G with nitrogen gas, and the temperature
It was immersed in an oil bath maintained at 140°C and allowed to react for 120 minutes. The pressure reached 16.3 Kg/cm 2 G in 45 minutes, decreased to 8.0 Kg/cm 2 G after 100 minutes, and remained almost unchanged thereafter. After cooling the autoclave in an ice bath, the reaction product liquid was analyzed and unreacted propylene oxide was found.
At 0.01% by weight or less, the conversion rate of propylene oxide was virtually 100%. The selectivities of monopropylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, and others relative to the raw material propylene oxide were 80.4%, 18.6%, and 1.0%, respectively. Example 2 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that potassium tungstate was used as the catalyst. The results were as shown in Table 1. Example 3 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the amount of catalyst added was changed. The results were as shown in Table 1. Examples 4 to 5 In Example 1, the reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the amount of carbon dioxide present was changed. The results were as shown in Table 1. Examples 6 to 7 In Example 1, the reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the amount of water as a reaction raw material was changed. The results were as shown in Table 1. Example 8 In Example 1, the catalyst was tungstic acid 1.7
The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1, except that potassium hydrogen carbonate was used instead of carbon dioxide gas. The results were as shown in Table 1. Example 9 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the reaction raw material was 43.3 g of 1,2-butylene oxide and the reaction time was 240 minutes. As shown in Table 2, the conversion rate of 1,2-butylene oxide was virtually 100%, and the selectivity to monobutylene glycol was 85.7%. Comparative Example 1 A reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1, except that no catalyst was added and the reaction time was 240 minutes. The results were as shown in Table 1. Comparative Example 2 The reaction was carried out in the same manner as in Example 1, except that no carbon dioxide gas was added and the total pressure was set to 6 kg/cm 2 G using only nitrogen gas. The results were as shown in Table 1.
