The present invention relates to a novel liquid crystal compound having small positive dielectric anisotropy and low viscosity, and a liquid crystal composition containing the same. Liquid crystal display elements utilize optical anisotropy and dielectric anisotropy, which are the characteristics of liquid crystal materials, and their display methods include TN type (twisted nematic type), DS type (dynamic scattering type), guest There are host type, DAP type, etc., and each method requires different properties of the liquid crystal material used. However, in any case, the liquid crystal materials used in these materials must exhibit a liquid crystal phase over as wide a temperature range as possible, and must be stable against moisture, heat, air, light, and the like. However, at present, there is no single compound that satisfies these conditions, and the current situation is to obtain something that can be put to practical use by mixing several types of liquid crystal compounds and non-liquid crystal compounds. Furthermore, depending on the type of display element, the dielectric anisotropy △ε may need to be positive, negative, or somewhere in between; any △
A liquid crystal mixture having a value of ε can be obtained by appropriately mixing one having a positive value of Δε and one having a negative value of Δε. However, when mixing compounds with positive and negative values of △ε, compounds with large absolute values of △ε are difficult to mix and crystals are likely to form. Compounds with good viscosity compatibility have been desired as components constituting liquid crystal compositions. The compounds of the present invention meet these needs to some extent. That is, the present invention is based on the general formula (In the above formula, R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and X represents F, C, or Br) trans-4-(trans-4'-substituted cyclohexyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 3''- It is a halogenophenyl ester. This compound has a small △ε of about 0.2, so adding it as a component to a liquid crystal mixture makes it difficult for crystals to precipitate, and its viscosity is as low as 30 cp at 20°C, so it It is also effective in lowering the viscosity. Next, the method for producing the compound of the present invention will be described. Trans-4-(trans-4'-substituted cyclohexyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is converted into an acid chloride with thionyl chloride, and then 3 -If halogenophenol is reacted in pyridine, the desired trans-4-(trans-4'-substituted cyclohexyl)-
Cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 3'-halogenophenyl ester is obtained. Showing this as a chemical formula: (R and X are the same as above) The present invention will be explained in more detail below using examples and application examples. Example 1 [trans-4-(trans-4'-propylcyclohexyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 3-
Production of fluorophenyl ester] In a flask, trans-4-(trans-4'-
Add 10 ml of thionyl chloride to 0.02 mol (5 g) of propylcyclohexyl-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid and warm. The mixture became homogeneous in 1 hour, and after further heating for about 30 to 1 hour, excess thionyl chloride was distilled off under reduced pressure. The remaining oil is trans-4-(trans-4'-propylcyclohexyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid chloride. On the other hand, 2.2 g (0.02 mol) of 3-fluorophenol was dissolved in 10 ml of pyridine, and the acid chloride obtained earlier was added thereto, stirred well, and left overnight. Add 100 ml of toluene and wash the toluene layer with 6NHC, then with 2N NaOH solution, and then with water until it becomes neutral. After drying over anhydrous sodium sulfate, toluene was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the remaining crystals were recrystallized with 50 ml of ethanol to yield 5.5 g of trans-4-(trans-4'-
Propyropylcyclohexyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 3-fluorophenyl ester was obtained. Yield 79%. The physical property values and elemental analysis values are
Shown in the table.
