ト手段に様々な工夫を施すことによって用紙サイズを認
識できる様にしている。例えば、A4用紙と85用紙の
どちらがセットされているかを自動的に認識できる様に
なっている。ところが、用紙サイズに加えて用紙のセッ
ト方向も合わせて認識したいという要請もあるが、これ
をも自動的に認識可能とするためにはカセット手段に更

の有無を検出することにより、上記用紙のセット方向を

は用紙5のセット方向が異なる。第2図および第3図に
おいて、カセット手段1から用紙センサ3までの距離を
dとすると、用紙5をまず距離dだけ吸入した場合、用
紙センサ3はまず用紙5が有ることを検出する。ここで
、更にセンサ手段3から距ficだけ吸入した場合を考
える。用紙の長手方向、短手方向の長さを各々b、aと
すると、
a < c < b
となる距mcを選べば、第2図の場合用紙無、第3図の
場合用紙有を検出するので用紙セット方向を認識するこ
とが可能となる。通常は、C=(a+b)/2がなり立

することにより、カセット手段にa雑な認識手段を設け
ることなく容易に用紙セット方向を認識できるといフた
