Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect the position of a fissionable material without requiring extreme labor even in the case of a large apparatus, etc., by inducing nuclear fission in the fissionable material sticking to the apparatus, etc., and selectively measuring the fission neutron generated at the time of the nuclear fission. CONSTITUTION:The fast neutron generated from a neutron generating source 8 is sufficiently moderated and thermalized by a neutron moderator 9. This thermal neutron is collimated 11, 12 to a slit shape and is projected to a measurement sample 3 under rotation. The nuclear fission is induced in the position where the thermal neutron flux is irradiated from an irradiation port 15 to the outside circumference of the sample 3 if there is the fissionable material in said position. The position where the slit-shaped fissionable material exists in the radiation direction where the fissionable material sticking to the outside circumference of the sample 3 exists is thereby detected. The presence or absence of the fissionable material and the position thereof are detected by measuring this fission neutron in discrimination from the irradiated thermal neutron.
