Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a target for spattering made of rare earth group transition metal series alloy without any blow hole by using material having higher heat conductivity at one face of a mold than that at the other face to make unidirectional solidification. CONSTITUTION:For example, only the bottom face part 2 of the mold is made of cast iron and the four faces for side faces 1, 1' are all made of alumina. By using this mold, the bottom face part made of the cast iron has heat conductivity extremely higher than the side face parts made of the alumina and the heat of the molten metal 4 is almost flowed toward bottom face part 2. Therefore, the solidification of the molten metal 4 is almost started from the bottom face part 2 made of the cast ion and progressed to upward. By this unidirectional solidification, the rare earth group transition metal series alloy ingot can de produced and the target for sputtering processed from this ingot gives stable discharge and is easily used without any crack.
