The 4-nitrobenzylidene aniline deriv. expressed by the formula has an electron donative group and electron attracting group in the molecule and has the long pi electron system so that the electron transfer in the molecule progresses smoothly at the time when the polarization is generated by the electric field of light and, therefore, the nonlinear optical constant beta is large. The nonlinear optical element consisting of the compd. expressed by the formula exhibits the remarkable nonlinear optical effect of the second order.
