PURPOSE:To prevent a switching element from self-heating breakdown by detecting the terminal voltage of a semiconductor cell for controlling to switch the current of a field winding of a charging generator, and interrupting the cell when it is a predetermined value or higher. CONSTITUTION:A switching element 15 for controlling an exciting current flowing to the field winding 13 of a charging generator is formed by connecting in parallel a plurality of semiconductor cells 151, 152. Power MOS field effect transistors and the like are used as the cells. A current detecting resistor 17 is connected in series with part of the cells 151, 152 to obtain a voltage proportional to the current flowing to the cell. This voltage is compared with a predetermined value by a current limiter (differential amplifier) 19, and the cells 151, 152 are interrupted when a large current exceeding the predetermined value flows.
