Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce microcapsules for cultivating cells capable of sustaining a cultivation environment in a good state for a long period without damaging cultivated cells, by entrapping an aqueous medium for cultivating the cells in organic thin film capsules. CONSTITUTION:A plant cell suspension and culture medium are added to an aqueous solution of a water-soluble alginate, such as sodium alginate, in a suitable concentration to afford a mixed aqueous solution of the alginate culture medium, containing suspended plant cells and adjusted so as to finally provide about 0.5wt.% alginate concentration. The above-mentioned aqueous solution is then passed through a capillary, such as injection needle, and dripped into an aqueous solution of about 0.5wt.% polyethyleneimine, e.g. kept under acidic condition, while gently stirring to entrap the aqueous medium containing the plant cells in films of the resultant alginic acid-polyethyleneimine adduct.
