Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a mud conditioner which is inexpensive and exhibits excellent flowability, viscosity, film-forming property, etc., by mixing an inorg. material powder comprising a swelling clay powder mainly composed of montmorillonite and a mineral powder other than the swelling clay with a water-soluble polymer compd. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. inorganic material comprising 1-40pts.wt. montmorillonite powder containing mainly an alkali metal as an exchangeable anion (e.g., montomorillonite wherein at least 65% of the exchangeable anion is Na) and 99-66pts.wt. mineral powder other than the aforesaid swelling clay (e.g., shale powder) is mixed with 0.01-5pts.wt. water-soluble polymer compd. (e.g., carboxymethylcellulose) to prepare a mud conditioner. The mud water prepd. by making use of this mud conditioner is more inexpensive than that prepd. by making use of a commercially available mud conditioner comprising bentonite and exhibits excellent flowability, viscosity, film-forming property, etc.
