Abstract

PURPOSE: To achieve non-contact measurement of orientation property of pulp, by irradiating a paper with light as parallel light with a collimation lens to obtain a signal output corresponding to the orientation of the pulp from an angle of polarization of a polarizer, when the quantity of light received by a light receiving means reaches its maximum.
CONSTITUTION: Light from a light source 2 is turned with a collimation lens 3 to a parallel light to irradiate a paper 8. The light transmitted through the paper 8 is applied to a polarizer 5. When an orientation of pulp at an irradiated part and an angle of polarization of the polarizer 5 coincide, the quantity of light transmitted through the portion of the polarizer 5 reaches its maximum. Then, when orientation of the pulp differs by 90° from the angle of polarization of the polarizer 5, the quantity of the transmission light reaches its minimum. A signal output is obtained in accordance with the orientation of the pulp from the angle of polarization of the polarizer 5 as obtained when the quantity of light received with a photo detector 7 reaches its maximum. Such measurement is performed sequentially across the width of the paper 8 to detect the degree of width-wise orientation of the pulp.
