Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable recording a multiplicity of times with a single multilayer-type thermal transfer medium, by detecting the mounted condition of a container for a thermal transfer medium, and selectively driving either of heat generating resistor arrays according to the result of detection. CONSTITUTION:A control program for a printing process is stored in a ROM 100B constituting a controlling part 100. When a signal indicating that detection of an ink ribbon 105 is finished is inputted from a ribbon-detecting part 101, a signal indicative of whether the ribbon 105 is to be used for the first time or the next time is stored into a RAM 100C in the controlling part 100. A heat generating resistor array to be used of a thermal head 104 is determined according as the ribbon 105 is to be used for the first time or the next time, and the head 104 is moved in a recording direction or in the opposite direction by a distance equal to the spacing between the heat generating resistor arrays 3 and 4, thereby ensuring that a printing-starting position is fixed, regardless of the heat generating resistor array being used. Printing data is outputted to the heat generating resistor array to be used for recording, whereas printing data '0' is outputted to the other heat generating resistor array. The thermal head 104 is energized tor a predetermined period of time to generate heat, thereby performing recording.
