Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently convert a sulfide having an oxygen functional group at the β-position into a sulfoxide and sulfone corresponding to the above- mentioned sulfide, by aerobically cultivating a specific bacterium belonging to the genus Corynebacterim in a culture medium containing the above- mentioned sulfide.
CONSTITUTION: A microorganism, such as Corynebacterium.equi IFO 3730, Corynebacterium.equi ATCC 6939, Corynebacterium.equi ATCC 7698, Corynebacterium.equi ATCC 7699 or Corynebacterium.equi ATCC 10461, is aerobically cultivated in a culture medium of an inorganic salt containing preferably a 14W20C olefin or saturated hydrocarbon at pH 5W10, preferably pH 7W8 and 20W40°C. A sulfide expressed by formula I [Ar is unsubstituted or substituted phenyl (lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen, etc., as a substituent group); R is H, 1W12C alkyl or 2W12C alkenyl or acyl] in an amount of 0.1W5% is added simultaneously with inoculation of a spawn or after propagation of the microorganism and cultivation is carried out for 1W5 days to afford the aimed oxide expressed by formula II.
