Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a high strength Al alloy suitable for use as a material for aircraft, etc., by homogenizing and preheating an Al alloy billet contg. specified percentages of Cu, Li and Mg under specified conditions and by successively subjecting the billet to extrusion, air cooling and artificial aging. CONSTITUTION:An alloy billet consisting of, by weight, 0.5-5.0% Cu, 0.5-4.0% Li and the balance Al with impurities or further contg. 0.5-6.0% Mg and one or more among 0.05-0.30% Cr, 0.05-1.0% Mn, 0.05-0.30% Zr and 0.05-0.30% V is homogenized at 520-550 deg.C for 2-48hr, preheated to 450-520 deg.C, extruded, air-cooled and artificially aged. Thus, an Al alloy having satisfactory strength is obtd. only by aging without carrying out soln. heat treatment.
