Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a sterilizable hemoglobin adsorbent easy to prepare, by introducing a carboxyl group into the surface of a porous substance. CONSTITUTION:As a method for introducing a carboxyl group into the surface of an adsorbent, there are method for coating the surface of an insoluble carrier with a polymer having a carboxyl group, a method for chemically fixing a compound having a carboxyl group to the surface of the insoluble carrier and a method for forming the adsorbent from the polymer having the carboxyl group. As the carrier to be used, a porous one is pref. and there are porous glass, a porous polyacrylamide gel or the like. As the polymer having the carboxyl group, there are a styrene/maleic copolymer, polyacrylic acid and polymethacrylic acid. In fixing the compound to be fixed, for example, the carrier is irradiated with radiation or ultraviolet rays to be activated and the carboxyl-containing polymer is graft-polymerized. A copolymer obtained by copolymerizing a monomer having a carboxyl group, a crosslinkable monomer and, if necessary, other monomer is molded into a proper shape and subsequently made insoluble by crosslinking reaction.
