Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive dummy rod useful in a wire drawing furnace, etc., for an optical fiber preform, etc., without atmospheric pollution, by mechanically connecting specific two rods and covering the whole outer periphery except part thereof with a pipe, such as quartz glass, in a loose fit state. CONSTITUTION:The tip of the first dummy rod 1 formed from a heat-resistant material, (e.g. metal or ceramic) other than quartz glass or multicomponent glass is mechanically connected to the second dummy rod 7 made of quartz (multicomponent) glass with a protrusion 4, pinhole 5, pin 6 made from a heat- resistant material, such as titanium, of the rod 1, etc. Almost the whole outer periphery except the chucking point by a holding tool (B) of the rod 1 is then covered with a pipe 2 made of quartz (multicomponent) glass so as to provide a space (g) present between the pipe 2 and the outer periphery of the rod 1 in a loose fit state and prevent the pipe 2 from moving to the side of the rod 7 with a stopper 3. A preform (A) is then fused and connected to the tip of the rod 7 to form the aimed dummy rod 10 for holding an optical fiber preform.
