Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain the aimed compound in high yield and selectivity, by using a catalyst containing the Periodic table Vb, VIb or VIIb group transition metal in producing the titled compound by reducing an aromatic hydroperoxide in the presence of the catalyst in order to provide the titled compound. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydroperoxide is reduced in the presence of a catalyst containing the periodic table Vb, VIb or VIIb transition metal, preferably one or more kind of V, Cr and Mn normally at 0-100 deg.C, preferably 20-80 deg.C to readily obtain the aromatic alcohol without requiring special reaction apparatus advantageously in the industrial scale, e.g. in advantage capable of carrying out the reaction also at ordinary pressure in high yield and selectivity. Further more the above-mentioned raw material is preferably used at a concentration of 20-90wt.%, especially 30-85wt.% by dissolving the raw material in an aromatic hydrocarbon such as cumene. The above-mentioned catalyst is used at an amount of normally 0.5-20wt.%, especially 2-10wt.% based the above-mentioned raw material.
