Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the counting of cells including the activity thereof and whether the cells are live or dead and to facilitate the recognition of the cells by injection of a dyeing liquid by updating the magnified image of the cells or microorganisms in a medium, then subjecting the difference in the luminance of each cell of every one image screen to image processing. CONSTITUTION:A liquid suspension 11 contg. the cells in a culture vessel 10 is sampled 20 and is mixed 23 with the dyeing liquid 31. The liquid mixture is transported to a flow cell 41. The image of the cells is magnified by an image magnifying device 42 in the cell 41 and since the cell 41 is moved in directions X and Y by an X-Y stage 42, the image is successively updated. The images are picked up by a TV camera 44, are subjected to A/D conversion 51 and are stored in an image memory 51M. The many-valued images stored therein are sent to a live cell image recognizing deice 60 where the number, size, shape, and luminance, etc., of all the cells are calculated. The images are also sent to a dead cell image recognizing device 70 where the calculations are similarly made with the dead cells and low-activity cells. The respective results of the calculations are sent to an activity diagnosing device 80 where the number, size, shape and luminance, etc., of the cells are calculated. The active condition of the cell groups is diagnosed overall from the results thereof.
