Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled magnetic powder having sharp particle size distribution and excellent coercive force and suitable as a magnetic recording medium for high-density recording, by using a starting material composed of compounds of Ba, Fe, Co and Zn at prescribed ratios, dissolving the raw material in water, adding an alkali metal hydroxide to the solution, subjecting to hydrothermal treatment, mixing a flux to the obtained precipitate and baking the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: A starting raw material is produced by mixing compounds of Ba, Fe, Co and Zn at gram-atom ratios of Ba/Fe=1/1W12, Fe/Co=12-x-y/x and Fe/Zn=12-x-y/y. The raw material is dissolved in water and an alkali metal hydroxide is added to the solution in an amount to attain a concentration of ≥3mol./l to obtain a precipitate. A slurry containing the precipitate is subjected to hydrothermal treatment at 130W300°C for 0.5W20hr. The obtained precipitate of fine crystals is washed with water, mixed with 10W80wt.% (based on dried precipitate) of a flux (e.g. NaCl), baked at 700W950°C for 10minW30hr, washed and dried to obtain the titled magnetic powder having a hexagonal magnetoplumbite plate crystal of formula (n is 0.8W1.0; x is 0.1W1.5; y is 0.1W1.5), a specific surface area of 20W70m2/g, a coercive force of 200W15,000e and a plate ratio of 2W15.
