Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a high-density sintered AlN material having high thermal conductivity, by blending AlN raw material powder obtained by directly nitriding metallic Al with a compound of group IIa of the periodic table as a sintering auxiliary, molding and burning.
CONSTITUTION: High-purity metallic AlN powder is used as a raw material and high-purity AlN powder is obtained by direct nitriding method. The AlN powder is pulverized in a nonoxidizing atmosphere especially in an organic solvent, blended with a sintering auxiliary (preferably one consisting essentially of Y2O3 or a precursor thereof) selected from a metallic group of groups IIa, IIIa and IIIb of the periodic table, molded and burnt. Consequently, a sintered AlN material having ≥100W/m°K thermal conductivity and ≥95% relative density is readily obtained.
